Poster Design For Guardians Of The Garden

A friend set up a market stall to sell her hand crafted ornaments for the home and garden so I volunteered to design a poster for her.

She was after an A1 sized poster to go on an A-board to be displayed outside the market entrance to guide customers to her stall. The second design to be for a general A4 poster to be posted through letter boxes and dotted about in shop windows and other public places to advertise her new business.

Painting Plastic Plant Pots!

I had a few weather worn plastic pots laying around the garden that looked a bit tired, so I thought I'd brighten them up with a lick of paint.

Easy to do and they look so much better! In fact some of these plastic pots already had the patterns embossed on them which makes me wonder... Are we meant to paint them anyway?

Here's some before and after pics...

I painted a few smaller pots in yellow and purple as well and they look so much better! May all the pots be painted!

Crystal Cleansing

It's been ages since I last cleaned my crystals and to be honest something I've never really bothered to do, other than run them under the tap to wash the dust off, but after a bit of research I have decided to try and cleanse them regularly and properly.

I started off putting a few of my smaller crystals out a couple of days ago in the back garden, where we have had quite a bit of the rain for the last few days. When I bought them in earlier, they felt energized and had a nice clean sparkle to them. So I've decided to gather all the rest of the crystals from the house and place them outside into the rain for a clean.

From what I have read in my research, it is good to cleanse crystals to help get them back to their original, sparkly vibration level to where they can do their best work on helping you.

Crystal Guidance states:
"Simply put, absolutely everything has a vibration, which even includes emotions and physical objects. Negative energy, including negative emotions and physical pain, have low vibrations. Crystals, when they are at their optimal vibrational state, resonate at a high vibration. Low and high vibrations cannot exist together, so the crystals will help to raise the low energies to high ones. That high vibrational energy means your health and over all well-being is increased".

The full moon is meant to be a great time to cleanse your crystals but there are also lots of other ways too. I have listed them below:

Earth Cleansing ~ If you're lucky enough to have a yard or a bit of earth that won't be disturbed dig a whole and bury your crystals. Once buried, visualize the old, stale, negative energy being drawn out and away from your crystals. Then visualize them being filled with new, positive energies. Leave them in the ground for at least 24 hours, allowing Mother Earth to cleanse and restore your crystals. This method is especially good for geodes. Just make sure you remember where you buried them!

Rain Water ~ Leaving crystals outside in the rain is a great way to cleanse them. Put them in a secure spot or in a bowl and just let them hang out in the rain.  Spend some time visualizing the old energies dripping away from them. Don't be afraid to put them outside in a storm. Storm energy is a great cleanser but will also give crystals a powerful charge. Just make sure, if the storm is accompanied by strong winds, the crystals are secure and won't get blown over.

Running Water ~ Holding your crystals under lukewarm, running water is a quick way to cleanse them.  If you have access to a body of water like a stream or lake, you can hold your crystals in the water (hold on tight!). Visualize the stagnate, old and negative energies flowing down the drain or down stream.

Smoke ~ Cleansing with smoke, or smudging, is another easy way to cleanse crystals. There are a variety of cleansing herbs and incenses that can be used but I stick with sage. Hold the crystal in the smoke and visualize the old energies being carried away in the smoke. If possible, have a window open so the smoke can travel out and away.

Full Moon & Sunlight ~  Great for when cleansing a lot of crystals. Place your crystals on a windowsill or outside. Make sure they are in a spot where they will get full moonlight and sunlight. The full moon light will cleanse the crystals and the sunlight will recharge them. Allowing crystals to spend some time in sunlight is especially beneficial for clear quartz but can cause crystals, such as rose quartz, to fade over time.

There's a great tutorial I can recommend over at this blog here.

Large Scale Painting - Evil Tree Spirits

A few years back I produced some artwork called Evil Tree Spirits, a pencil and gel ink pen drawing, that I then scanned into the computer and coloured digitally.

For a while I have wanted to reproduce this large scale and finally got round to it over the bank holiday weekend. I thought it would make an excellent gift to the guys staying at Borras Community Protection Camp to help brighten the place up and feel a bit more homely for them and to thank them for what they are doing to help keep a Frack Free Wrexham.

I took some photo's of the progression of the painting as I thought it would be interesting to see. Below are these pictures from start to finish and finally, hanging in it's new home. I was quite pleased with the outcome and have already invested in some more canvasses for my next painting. You will have to wait and see what that will be.

DIY Bird Table Project

I've been doing alot of work in the garden lately to give it a re-vamp and decided to bring an old bird table back to life.

This involved taking pretty much the whole thing apart, chiselling off an old plywood base, giving it a lick of paint and nailing it to a new freshly painted luscious lime coloured fence post in my little corner of relaxation down at the bottom of the garden. ("....amongst the birds and the bees, lived alot of tiny people called the Poddington Peas" *sorry couldn't resist that* haha).

It was really cheap to do, cost just under a fiver for some paint pot testers - I opted for Purple Pout and Morroccan Orange. The hardest part was unscrewing the rusty old fused nails when taking the original thing apart.

Quite pleased with how it has turned out and already have an idea for my next project in the garden which will involve turning the outhouse into a she-shed... But not until I've given it a lick of paint, you'll have to wait and see how that one turns out, but for now I'll leave you with some photo's from the birdhouse project.

Poster Design: Build, Gardening & Painty Day For Frack Free Wrexham

I got asked to design another poster for Frack Free Wrexham and was happy to oblige, quite straight forward as sticking to the same design style as the Easter Fun Day Poster, I simply developed the overall theme to fit more with the event which was for a Build, gardening and painty day with an emphasis being on Frack Free Food and Farming, encouraging people to come and grow their own vegetables.

Here is the finished poster below...

How Advertisement Has Changed - A Ranty Pants Post!

Random ranty pants post! I find TV advertisement of today very very irritating.

There was a point in my life where I loved TV ad's, I'd read books, buy DVD's of Ad directors... But nowadays... Well... What a load of shit!

The past couple of years seems to have seen this shift in TV ad's working the whole 'playing on happy family emotions' element which I find bloody boring, cringeworthy and irritating. Mostly annoying by the softly whispy-waspy voice of some female singer covering what was once (in my opinion) a good song, usually overlaid by some happy smiley people acting out some standard cliche'd bullshit routine.

Whatever happened to adverts being fun, creative minded and musically pleasing?

Call me weird, but for me there aren't really any ad's that creatively please me anymore, I like the surreal, the thoughtful and the wonderful but TV adverts at the moment lack all those elements big time!

Anyway, I just felt like putting that rant out there and also to share some of what I consider beautiful and creative ad's of the past. None of this waspy voiced overlaid bullshit. Just pure surrealism!

Levi's Commercial - Spaceman 1995 - (Oh how I loved this song and the aliens!)

Audi RS4 - Spider TV Ad 2005 - (Surreal!)

Wotsits - Is That A Whoosh Or What? 1993 - (Catchy and fun!)

Guinness Surfer Ad With Horses - 1998 (Mesmerizing)

Smirnoff Through The Bottle Ad - 1995 (Trippy)

Vanilla Cupcakes Recipe

I'm on a cake making phase. Tackled a few recipes lately, everything from Lemon cake through to my own twist on a carrot cake. It was my friends son's birthday at the weekend, so I made him some cakes and thought I'd share the recipe.

175g unsalted butter.
175g caster sugar.
2 teaspoons of vanilla extract.
3 eggs.
175g of self raising flower.
Cream cheese icing. (I used plain flavoured on some and strawberry flavoured on the other).
Sprinkles of your choice. (I used popping candy on some and sugar cane and hundreds and thousands on others).

  1. Preheat the oven to a 170 degrees/ Gas mark 3.
  2. Mix the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Pour in the vanilla essence and add the eggs mix again to make a yellow batter.
  4. Add the flour and mix until it is smooth, about 5 minutes. Stop once in the middle of this and scrape the sides down using a spatula. The longer mixing time enables air to get into the mixture which will make it lighter. Pour into fairy or cupcake cases.
  5. Bake for about 14 minutes. Keep an eye on them. They will be perfect when they bounce back to the touch and the top still looks slightly sticky. This will ensure they keep their moisture.
  6. Leave on a cooling rack for 30 minutes or until cool, then decorate as you wish. (I used cream cheese icing and sprinkles).

Easter Family Fun Day Poster Design For Frack Free Wrexham

Back in March 2013, Wrexham Council rejected a planning application for a test drill, that was over-ruled by an outside government inspector. It wasn't until October last year that I learnt that this was happening down the road from where I live, so I attended a public awareness meeting to find out more.

The risks from fracking are truly outrageous and I find it insane that our government are trying to push this through despite the damage that has happened abroad. BUT with money to be made and shares in the industry, I don't suppose our Tory government care about the public or what we think!

I won't waffle on too much, as everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but if you'd like to learn more you can visit:

Back to my original point of this post, as being my blog I share artwork, designs, life and more.... But basically I wanted to share with you this poster that I volunteered to design for Frack Free Wrexham. It's for an Easter Family Fun Day that will be held on 5th April at the Borras Protection Camp

I've volunteered to run an arts and crafts stall, so we'll be making Easter egg bags with the kiddies so they can put their treats in from the Easter Egg Hunt.

The idea behind the event is to try and encourage new people in the community to visit the camp, have a good fun day out, but also learn more. Surprisingly enough, despite massive coverage in the local press, there are still lots of people in the local area who aren't aware that this is happening in Wrexham.

This should be a fun day out for all the family with a BBQ, Tombola, Easter egg hunt and more!

Here's the poster I volunteered to design for the event...

Help Save The Bee's By Planting These!

Bee's are in decline and have been disappearing since the late 1990's.

The main reasons for the bee's decline is down to a number of factors including industrial agriculture, parasites, more patio'd gardens and climate change.

Bee's play an important part in our eco systems. A third of all our food depends on their pollination! A world without pollinators would be devastating for food production.

Bee's are essential in pollinating the crops that form our food and also the wild plants that grow across the country and provide food for much of our wildlife. Without bees, the very fabric of our lives will change considerably.

These garden friend's need our help! How you may wonder? Simple.... Plant these and help save our bee's!

Even if you only have a small garden or patio, herbs can be grown in pots or buckets and are very easy to maintain.

There is a petition here to keep the ban on bee-killing pesticides. Please sign.

Dandelions.... Make A Wish!

"Dandelion, puff away, make my wish come true some day"

Wishes aren't the only belief of the dandelion, here are some others.....

Folklore says that blowing the seeds off a dandelion is said to carry your thoughts and dreams to a loved one.

Another common belief of the Dandelion is that the number of seeds that remain after blowing the seed head, are the number of years you have left to live. The belief is that the number of seeds left, is the time and this gave rise to the term 'Dandelion Clock'.

The Love Of The Sun And Moon

"The story about how the Sun loved the Moon so much, he died every night to let her breathe".

It's Hallmark Day (I mean, Valentine's Day), so what better post for a blog than a collection of some of my favourite poems and pictures portraying the love of the Sun and Moon....

Historical Poem: Types of Firewood

A historical and well known rhyme to describe the virtues of various species of timber when used as a fuel...

Beechwood fire burns bright and clear,
If the logs are kept a year.

Store your beech for Christmastide,
With New Year holly cut beside.

Chesnut only good, they say,
If for years ‘tis stored away.

Birch and firewood burn too fast,
Blaze too bright and do not last.

Flames from larch will shoot up high,
Dangerously the sparks will fly,
But ashwood green and ashwood brown
Are fit for a queen with a golden crown.

Oaken logs, if dry and old,
Keep away the winter cold.

Poplar gives a bitter smoke,
Fills your eyes and makes you choke.

Elmwood burns like a churchyard mould,
E’en the very flames are cold.

Hawthorn bakes the sweetest bread,
So it is in Ireland said.

Applewood will scent the room,
Pearwood smells like flowers in bloom.

But ashwood wet and ashwood dry
A king may warm his slippers by.
